Big Lake Trail Report

TrailsI just got back from riding on the trail up to Big Lake, it is in very good condition for the springtime. There's a few deep puddle/lakes on the trail, forcing those of us without snorkeling setups to detour over to the trail along the road. Read on for more details...I started out at the Fisher's Y in Big Lake where the Post office is, I was in that gravel pit across the street from the Post Office.

Following the trail that goes about halfway up along the hillside following along Big Lake Road I encountered a bunch of snow still hanging on, but nothing deep. Down the hill was a decent sized puddle, then open driving until I reached the trails convergence at Rocky Lake Rd (think they call it Beaver Lake rd now??). This is where the power line trail cuts up behind the gravel pit and Lions Club to go behind Big Lake. Right there at the Big Lake Road it has turned into a lake. I went a little ways into it on first approach, but I did not care to test out how deep it got, so backed out, went back to the gravel pit and started filing the journey.

This time when I got to the lake in the trail I went off toward Big Lake Road to go around it. This was a long submerged section of the trail from what I could see from the temp trail by the road.

I played hide and go seek with the trail as it ducked under the water for a while, then finally had to give up the filming at the Houston High School cutoff when the trail ahead was victim to people driving trucks over it.

Nothing messes up an ATV trail faster than a bug bogging truck. I don't mind them, it can be a fun challenge on an open trail, but when the trail has been torn up by a truck then the damage hidden underneath an unknown depth of ICE COLD water and I still have a ways to ride in 40 degree F temps... yeah, I tend to dislike truck damage at that point.

So, I put my camera away and rode the rest of the way without video, I'll see if I can catch the rest of the trail later. I can say that it was fairly open save for one deep lake that was not too bad to get through.

I'll get the video up on YouTube when I can and embed it here.
